Learning how to choose a tactical flashlight starts with unlearning one habit: reading the lumen number and stopping there. Lumens describe how much light a torch makes in total. They say almost nothing about how far that light reaches, how long it lasts, or whether the thing still works after it bounces off a driveway.

This guide sorts out what the numbers on the box actually mean, how much output you need for real tasks, why beam shape matters more than raw brightness, and how batteries, switches and mounting hardware decide whether a light becomes your daily carry or a drawer ornament. Lumens, candela and throw: what each number tells you

Lumens measure total light output. A high lumen count means a lot of light is leaving the front of the torch, but it does not say where that light goes. Candela measures intensity in the center of the beam, and that is the number that predicts distance. Throw is the practical version of the same idea, usually stated in meters.
