Two terms come up constantly. Actuation point is how far the key must travel before the press registers. Actuation force is how hard you must push to get there, usually quoted in grams. Everything else is variation on those themes.

Linear switches: smooth all the way down

A linear switch moves in one uninterrupted stroke — no bump, no click, just a spring getting progressively firmer until the key bottoms out. Reds are the classic example in most manufacturers’ colour conventions, typically on the lighter end of the force range.

Tactile switches: a bump you can feel

Tactile switches add a small bump partway through the keypress, right around the actuation point. Your finger learns to feel the bump, register the letter, and move on without slamming the key to the deck. Browns are the conventional shorthand for this family.

Clicky switches: the bump, plus a soundtrack

Clicky switches take the tactile bump and add an audible click from a dedicated mechanism inside the housing. Blues are the archetype. The appeal is honest: every keypress delivers crisp physical and audio confirmation, and plenty of typists genuinely type better with it.

The specs beyond the big three

Actuation force

Lighter springs suit fast, featherweight typists but invite accidental presses; heavier springs feel deliberate but tire fingers over long sessions. Most mainstream switches sit in a middle band that suits most hands — only go notably light or heavy if you already know you prefer it.

Low-profile switches

Low-profile designs shorten the housing and travel for slimmer boards. The mechanism families are the same — linear, tactile, clicky — just compressed, and they pair with flatter keycaps for a laptop-adjacent feel.

Silent variants

Silent switches add internal dampening to soften both the downstroke and the return. They are the answer when you want a mechanical feel in a shared bedroom or on podcast mics.

  1. Pick by environment first. Shared space or frequent calls rules out clicky immediately.
  2. Pick by workload second. Mostly gaming points linear; mostly writing points tactile; mixed use, start tactile.

“Linear switches are only for gamers.” Plenty of professional writers prefer linears precisely because nothing interrupts the stroke; feedback preference is personal, not occupational. “Clicky switches make you type faster.” No switch family has a consistent speed advantage — accuracy and familiarity dominate, and most people type fastest on whatever they have used for six months. “Heavier switches prevent typos.” They reduce accidental brushes, but past a point they simply tire your hands; posture and practice fix more errors than spring weight ever will.

It is also worth remembering that the switch is only half the acoustic story.
