License plate covers are one of those car accessories that look simple in a product photo and turn out to have half a dozen decisions hiding behind them: regional sizing, how you power the thing, whether you want a switch or a remote, and the film that stops the whole panel throwing glare back at you.
Before any of that, though, there is a legal question that deserves an honest answer rather than a wink. So we will start there, then work through what you actually need to know before you buy.
First, the legal reality
Plate visibility rules vary enormously by country, state and territory, and in many places obscuring a registration plate on a public road is an offence. BL4CKOUT Labs itself positions its covers as being for off-road use, and that framing is worth taking at face value rather than reading past.

The concept is straightforward once you see the parts. A cover sits over your existing plate on a bracket, and it switches between clear and blacked out. Sizing is regional, not universal
This is the single most common ordering mistake, because plate dimensions are not standardised across markets and often are not even standardised front to rear within one market.
Australia is the clearest example. The car kit is made for vehicles running one slim front plate at 372 by 100mm and one standard rear plate at 372 by 134mm, which means a single vehicle needs two different sizes. Motorcycles run their own dimensions again, with the Australian bike standard at 7 by 4 inches, or 180 by 100mm.
Europe splits further, with separate listings for car, bike standard and bike universal fitments. Before ordering, measure both of your plates rather than assuming, and note which is which. Ordering two of the same size because the front and rear "looked similar" is a preventable mistake.
Powering it: hardwire, battery pack or switch
A blackout cover needs power to switch states, and how you supply that power determines how invasive the install is.
The battery pack route is the least invasive. The film nobody mentions until afterwards
Glossy panels reflect, and a reflective panel over a plate can be surprisingly annoying in daylight. BL4CKOUT sells a screen protector, essentially a matte film, that goes on top of the cover.
It does two jobs. It protects the cover from scratches, glare and daily wear, and the matte finish removes reflection so the plate underneath reads more clearly. The listings are careful to point out what it is not: the film alone is not the flagship blackout product, just a layer that installs over one.
Films are sold per fitment, so there are separate versions for Australia car slim, Australia car standard, Europe car, Europe bike standard, Europe bike universal and motorcycle. Match the film to the cover you actually bought.
